Through some complicated external circumstances, I couldn't finish my novel in Camp NaNoWriMo, and I can't play Wizard101 or blog anymore.

I know this is really sudden, and unlike the last time, I'm pretty sure this time it is goodbye. I wish I could play Khrysalis Part 2, but it's just not going to happen, so I'm going to accept that and just say: Thank you all so, so, much for reading my blog, Emma and Destiny for inspiring me to write a real novel (because this is something I'm not going to drop)...I'm just so grateful to all of you to making my time here a happy one.

I might not be able to see comments after this, so if you comment and I don't reply, don't think I'm ignoring you. I'm not! Just remember how much I enjoyed this, and the splendiferous thaumaturge!

I'm sorry this had to be so sudden, but...I guess this is it. It's time to move on with my life. Goodbye. And once again, thank you. :)
Three posts, all by Emma, all with the exact same post title, none actually making sense...what is wrong with her?

Absolutely nothing. Splendiferous dragon agrees with me. I had a splendiferous story, a splendiferous poem, and a splendiferous interview, and you say none of them make sense? You aren't making sense!

You know what? I've learned that there's not much point in arguing with you. I give up.

Okay! Now that Grace has giving up, to close out these posts before Sophia comes back, I give you... a splendiferous limerick!
It was blue, and it was splendiferous. It lived in Marleybone, and it roamed wild in the wilderness, which is really splendiferous if you think about it. One day, the dragon was next to a tree when it noticed something splendiferous.

My splendiferous dragon went to check it out. It was a wizard wearing blue and red, with another wizard wearing blue and purple; the two of them were definitely splendiferous. The splendiferous wizard in blue and red saw the dragon and wanted to know if she could ride him. The dragon said he wasn't sure if he wanted to leave the splendiferous green Marleybone wilderness, but he might be willing to if he was fed yogurt every day. So the splendiferous wizard in blue and red (hint: ME) So the wizard in blue and red hopped on the dragon, and the two made a really splendiferous team. They rode off together to be splendiferous and save the spiral from monsters.

From then on, the spiral owed its peace to the splendiferous duo of dragon and rider, and they lived happily ever after. Come back later for part two!

For all of April I will be rewriting Legends of Light at Camp NaNoWriMo. This means I will not be blogging over here, but I will have a NaNo Log over at my other blog, the Treehouse. A few posts are also scheduled for this month.

Thanks!
Who was smarter than any of them-a
She wrote poetry well
And no, she didn't smell
Because she was a beautiful gem-a!

She had impeccable fashion sense
And a taste for most odorous scents
Her clothes, red and blue
With white snow patterns, too
Made absolute, completely sense!

Well, they were red and blue in all
The months, but red and green in the hol
Idays, for festivity cheer
And a happy new year
But she wore a turkey hat in the fall!

It went gobbledy gobbledy cluck
Cluck cluck gobble cluck gobble cluck cluck
Cluck gobble cluck errrr
Cluck gobble gob- errrr
Gobble gobble gobble gobble cluck!
Business? Busy-ness?

Right. Anyway, I'm going to say busyness. My word processor says it's a word, so maybe it is!

Well, I will be planning the rewrite of my novel and I'll be busy for most of the weekend, so don't count on the Celestia World Review. It still might happen, but not necessarily, just so you know.

Thanks for understanding.

Camp NaNoWriMo starts in less than a week and I've done almost no planning for the rewrite

I'm questing in Saltmeadow Swamp

Emma has planted a pretty flower in her house that I don't think she'll take good care of

Now for the cooler things:

For Camp NaNoWriMo, Midday, aka Emma DawnRider, is in my cabin!

I'm almost out of Saltmeadow Swamp (I believe)

I am of a happy disposition

The snow is melting

It's going to be 60 degrees this weekend

This is my 150th post!

Spring - is - coming! :D

- Sophia ESophia EmeraldBlossomhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11005159278077632436noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8522687916585525553.post-33452433291891273542014-03-25T19:19:00.002-04:002014-03-25T19:19:42.137-04:00Oddly Memorable Thing #5: Snake BridgeSome things are memorable because they just look so freaking awesome.

The Thing

Snake bridge! With really awesome animation, sound effects, and context, this is one of the coolest bridges in the Spiral. Downside: the area lags. Is it because of this awesome bridge? Maybe. But no matter what, this is pretty darn cool.

Setting

Mooshu's theming is quirky, to say the least - the combination of Asian themes with European farm animals could be considered a risky move on KI's part. Luckily, it seems to be a winner. Oddly enough, cows in kimonos hardly even seem out of place here.

The graphics are very simple compared to some of the later worlds, but somehow, Mooshu is still gorgeous. The overall look of the world is probably the best of the Malistaire arc, not counting Grizzleheim, and the varied colors are a treat for the eye after the somewhat monochromatic Marleybone. The streets are plain, but I love both the Jade Palace and Yoshihito Temple. Pirate101 Mooshu is beautiful, but let's not forget the charms of Wizard101 Mooshu.

As for the music, many players say that it has some of the best soundtracks in the game, and for good reason. Although I still say Avalon is my very favorite, Mooshu is second place. It has a wonderful oriental feel to all of it, and the main theme somehow manages to be both serene and catchy at the same time. You can listen to it here.

Mooshu does quite well in setting overall - 9/10.

Story

Unfortunately, Mooshu's story is quite mediocre. The entire world was pretty much one big tangent, although it did have some redeeming points. I did like the themes of body, mind, and spirit throughout, and healing the Emperor seems like a bigger deal now that we know he's an important member of the Council of Light.

Otherwise, the story is pretty marginal; quite possibly one of the worst out of the Malistaire arc, but better than Wizard City. The world does a good job of minimizing frustration and a sense of "Why am I doing this again?" which I appreciate. Since Mooshu was one of the earliest worlds of the bunch and came before the era of major cutscenes, it has very little to offer, but it has plenty of charms in other areas.

Because I do have to cut it some slack given how early it was created, it gets - 7/10.

Gameplay

The gameplay of Mooshu is actually quite nice. The quests and pacing seem fairly balanced, dungeons are evenly placed, and the difficulty is balanced. Most of the gear here is quite good, and many bosses drop coveted spells and No Auction gear with school symbol designs.

The teleporters here were reasonably well-placed, and made for more convenient travel around the rather large areas - as Mooshu's "streets" don't have much going for them in the way of scenery, this helps quite a bit.

All in all, Mooshu's play was rather simple but straightforward, and the bosses keep making me come back for more, which is usually a good sign. (Pagoda-Shaped Urn, I will get more of you yet!) It gets - 8/10.

Conclusion

Averaged out, Mooshu merits a B or 8.0/10. It's definitely a good addition to the Wizard101 world lineup, and sports plenty of charm and fun to make me look forward to it.

Do you agree with my assessment of Mooshu? Do you think it's harsh? Overrating? Please comment! Thank you for reading, and I hope you enjoyed this week's World Review; next week, I will examine sunken Celestia!
Also, Emma says the guest bedroom of her house is done, but personally, I have some doubts about whether it's very hospitable. Oh well.

The Thing

In real life, I have chickens, so I really like this housing item. Not only is it animated, which is always awesome, but it has a yellow chicken outside. (The yellow ones are my favorites.) :)

I can't really think of too many uses for this item, although it could be really cute in a Red Barn Farm, but I love how it somehow ends up in the game anyway. I'm still thinking about making it an addition to one of my wizards' houses. Just not Emma's. Because wouldn't make any sense.

The Thing

Most people, if they're lucky/patient/rich enough to own housing teleporters, use them for transport from one house to another (or maybe quick access to other areas of the same house). Some people, however, have found an alternative way to use these extremely fun items...a very devious way indeed.

If you have pretty much any in-game housing experience, you'll know that the game doesn't allow items to be placed on top or inside of other items without using glitches, but the game doesn't count teleporter destination marks as real items. Therefore, other items can be placed directly on top of them.

This leads to the unfortunate wizard who uses the teleporter to get stuck inside the item. This is most commonly used in jail cells, which make some sense for a wizard to get stuck in, but it can also be used for beds, bathtubs, and lone rugs floating all by themselves in the distant sky with no way out.

This sounds awfully like Emma IceCrafter's sense of humor.
You waited a few days for the appointed day, but she called you and said you'd have to wait another week because she was really busy that weekend. Would your reaction be "Awesome! That's really cool!"? Would it?

Because apparently it was for someone on this blog. No World Review This Weekend received, oddly enough, an Awesome! and an LOL in the reactions. (Okay, if you don't think World Review is all that cool, please at least hold onto my analogy. I'm just pretending.)

If you really, really don't like World Review, reaction person, just comment and say so. Or maybe you misclicked. But either way, this doesn't make any sense.

The Thing

I don't know why I found this pet so disturbing. Maybe it's because there are, I don't know, FEET sticking out of an egg?

It's also a bit odd that this pet hatches from an egg in itself; maybe that's how long it takes for those very strange and disturbing feet to break out of the shell?

Although - this pet can be dyed various colored patterns, which makes it sort of cool, I suppose. I don't know. I've never owned one. But this is certainly a pet to be remembered.
Some things are just so cool and eye-catching that you can't help but remember them. And some things...are minor, sort of pointless, but oddly memorable - maybe because they're so pointless.

Oddly Memorable Thing

Radioactive Pizza: one of the most useless pet snacks in Wizard101, right up there with popsicle, drumstick, and yogurt (THE VERY NON-FANCY KIND). Just +1 Will bonus? Meh. Might as well give it a pass.

But just take a look for a minute. It's pizza...that's radioactive. This is pet poison in disguise! Sue KI for animal cruelty! (If you can call a clockwork an animal. Or a wraith. Or a rock. You know what? Forget I said anything.)

Seriously, though? Radioactive pizza would kill someone. This makes probably the least sense of any pet snack in the game. (Have a weirder one? Comment!) Candy pizza would have made more sense here.

And why does it give your pet more willpower, anyway? Oh! Because you really need a strength of will to force it down your throat! If, of course, a snowball has a throat.

By the way - happy St. Patrick's Day!
Setting

Avalon's basic theme is one of the best in the game. I really love the medieval feel to the entire world, and it suits the player as a wizard. With knights, minstrels, and Spiral versions of common story characters, Avalon goes above and beyond in this aspect.

However, I felt that the graphics here were a bit lacking. Contrary to the graphics of Azteca, which had very beautiful, lush, and detailed textures and settings, Avalon felt a bit...sparse. There were many empty, wide-open spaces, and although the world did have its graphical bright spots, like the rain effect of Lakeshore and the reflective Crystal Caves, it lacked detail overall and much of the scenery felt blockish, such as the square trees as seen in the picture. Also note the large, empty expanses of flat grass.

Avalon sports very few cutscenes; the only memorable one was in Ambrose's tower with the adult Morganthe at the beginning of the world, and it stands as possibly my favorite cutscene, or second only to the final Malistaire scene. Otherwise, the graphics are very unremarkable, so the world has very little to brag about in aesthetics.

The best redeeming quality in this world's setting is the music. Avalon sports many of my favorite themes in Wizard101; I absolutely love the main theme and glorious theme, and it has what I consider to be the best battle theme in the entire game. If you'd like to hear it, you can do that here.

Overall, Avalon has an excellent setting score - 9/10.

Story

Avalon has the best storyline of any of the worlds in the Morganthe arc so far, although Khrysalis Part 2 may surpass this when it's released. It offers much-needed background on important characters in the Wizard101 journey such as Ambrose, Gamma, and Morganthe, with the wonderful addition of more characters from the King Arthur mythology, suiting the running themes from Merle and Morganthe. Also, the poetry-dripping quests involving the Jabberwock absolutely steal the show.

The Lady of the Lake and her help on our quest for the Sword of Kings was also quite good, and I appreciate the bits about Sir Malory and Morganthe's betrayal of King Artorius; speaking of which, this leads up to one of my favorite quests in the entire game: the speaking statues. Morganthe's was my favorite out of all four, possibly because I was absolutely aching for more backstory on her character. I also enjoyed Ambrose's and Artorius's very much. Surprisingly, this world has very little to do with the adult Morganthe. Given that Morganthe is a cardboard villain, this was actually quite refreshing. I also very much liked going back in time to Ghost Avalon.

Given that the storyline had a fair amount of tangents on the way to the Sword of Kings, I'm going to give Avalon's story - 9/10.

Gameplay

Besides the occasional streaks of several Defeat and Collect quests in a row, Avalon's pacing was balanced, which I appreciate. The downgrade of the enemies' abilities in this world made the previous greatly increased health more manageable. I also liked the addition of the teleporter arches, which are a refreshing break from Zafaria's long walks to many of its areas. They were placed well, and made for easy traversing between areas.

However, there were a few quests in this world that were borderline excruciating to complete. Collecting the Necromantic Vigor from the Death Seraphs was the worst of these. Not only was it typical to collect zero from each battle, but the seraphs were some of the most difficult roaming enemies in all of Avalon. This quest had me stuck and unenthusiastic for several days.

Like all of the worlds in the Morganthe arc, the dropped gear is useless. At this point, I'm fairly sure it only exists so that players can sell it and keep a steady flow of incoming gold as they adventure. Of all Avalon's available gear, only the crafted selections have much appeal.

However, Avalon's gameplay was quite fun overall, especially with the addition of a few very engaging and unique cheating bosses - 8/10.

Conclusion

Overall, Avalon earns an A- or 8.7/10. It's really fun and engaging, and currently one of the best worlds the Spiral has to offer.

Do you agree with my assessment of Avalon? Do you think I'm giving it too much credit? If you found this interesting, please comment! Thank you for reading, and be sure to check out next week's review, where I examine the world of Mooshu!
I'm sorry if that let you down, but the review should be ready by tomorrow.

First off, I turned sound effects back on recently, and this makes Azteca a lot better, so I'm more enthusiastic now. It's not one of my favorite worlds by any means, but it's manageable, at least. I can't believe Emma IceCrafter is an archmage. I'm afraid Emma's guest room is looking a bit...shabby, but I can't talk her out of it. She says she wants to focus her money and time on the rooms she'll be using.

Second off, Camp NaNoWriMo April is coming. I've decided to do this for my Legends of Light rewrite (if you haven't seen that, the details are on my other blog). I'm starting to get really excited, not least because I've decided to make one of my real-life classmates a major character (she wants to carry poison in a vial around her neck) because her personality begs for one. Super cool changes are coming, and it's going to be great.

Right. See you tomorrow!

So, what is World Review?

As this is my first segment of the World Review, I think this is due for a little explanation. World Review, as you probably know, is a post series in which I review each and every world of the Spiral that can be accessed via a spiral door. As such, Grizzleheim and Wintertusk are one review, and Aquila will not be featured in a review at all (unless I start doing pirate world reviews, in which case - that's a very different story.) After some analysis, I will give the featured world a letter grade.

Note: the next paragraph is technical math stuff; skip if you're not interested.

I reach this conclusion by factoring in the three things about a world that I feel pretty much categorize everything about it: Setting (themes, graphics, and music), Story (well...), and Gameplay (difficulty, pace, how much it grinds). Each of these will receive a number score out of 10. Then, I average them out to get the final one out of ten score, which I transfer into a letter grade. Also, you should probably know that this review will be more complicated than the others, as Grizzleheim and Wintertusk are quite different.

Whew, that's over - now let's get started!

Setting

The basic themes behind Grizzleheim are pretty great. Vikings and bears - another creative combination of cultures and creatures from KI. Although perhaps not quite as downright daring as, say, Mooshu's farm animals, the bears, wolves, and ravens of Grizzleheim make much more mental sense. All in all, the innovative, icy ideas give this world, both Grizzleheim and Wintertusk, a good first impression in this review.

Grizzleheim's graphics are gorgeous. The rainbow bridge made me gasp when I first arrived in Northguard as a wee Apprentice doing Baldur Goldpaws's free preview quest. Also, have you noticed the mountains in the background against the sky (which is one of my favorite skies)? I didn't until two weeks ago - and I've seen this area for over two years.

Additionally, Wintertusk sports some excellent cutscenes; Grandmother Raven's freedom from her prison comes to mind. The variety of scenery in Wintertusk's four main areas (Austrilund, Vestrilund, Sudrilund, and Nordrilund) are a treat to the eye after the comparative monotony of more graphically formulaic worlds such as Dragonspyre.

All in all, in terms of apt aesthetic attractiveness, Grizzleheim and Wintertusk are pretty far up on the scale of worlds.

Next, music. Oh, music, how could I forget you? I very much love some of the themes from Grizzleheim, especially the earlier areas, though the combat theme is a bit lacking. However, Wintertusk had a different composer, and I have to say I didn't enjoy his music as much. I'm not sure exactly what made it unappealing, but maybe the absence of a clear melody had some affect. I'm sorry to say that the many musical melodies mentioned were mediocre, but click here to hear my favorite from this world.

Overall, a suitably solid start in setting - 8/10.

Story

Grizzleheim and Wintertusk's story lines, are, in many ways, a breath of fresh air. I appreciate that a new villain, or should I say team of villains, was created for this very long side world. Also, there was never really any doubt as to their motivations; they wanted to start the Everwinter, which would eventually freeze the entire Spiral. No vague, semi-pointless griping for power here (*cough* Morganthe *cough*).

However, this story, interesting as it may be, is not without its flaws. Characters served their function but never really established an emotional connection; although this is a computer game and therefore I shouldn't expect a novel-caliber story, I feel that the characters should really make me care what happened. Although some of them were charming enough in their moments of glory (like the Three Fates), most blurred into the stereotypes of their races. Grandmother Raven is a notable exception in this instance, however, but if she helped create the Spiral, she'd better be memorable!

Despite my moderate level of interest in this story, I can only give it a mediocre rating - 6/10.

Gameplay

What's cool about Grizzleheim (no pun intended) is that it's geared toward different level ranges, making for engaging play throughout much of the wizard's journey. Grizzleheim doesn't offer much in the way of XP points, and although KI promised to have much more in the way of rewards, I'm sorry to say they did not really deliver. Most of the No Auction gear dropped by Grizzleheim bosses is rather useless.

However, Wintertusk is much better in regards to remarkable rewards. Not only does it give substantial XP, but excellent gear for those yet to achieve a full Waterworks set. Also, this world sports many excellent gold farming hotspots, including Halfang, Erling, and many others.

The play in both Grizzleheim and Wintertusk dragged a little, and there were many defeat-and-collect objectives. Wintertusk was also formulaic to a certain extent. This world does have engaging dungeons, with a rather amusing quest in Vigrid Roughland's Frostholm and memorable cheats in Hrundle Fjord's Nastrond.

Otherwise, the quests and moderate difficulty of Grizzleheim and Wintertusk are fun but nothing to marvel at, but largely for the excellent gold farming, it nets a 8/10.

Conclusion

All in all, Grizzleheim/Wintertusk nets a C+ or 7.3/10. It's solid, but not a sensational, spectacular standout like some other worlds.

Bear in mind that votes for another option will not change my mind, as I have already started making graphics for this particular post. I don't really have much more to say now, so here's a picture of a bear.
I think they just might be.

Although, they might have good reasons for it. They promised early 2014, which is quickly waning away, and they might not be ready quite yet; after all, we don't want another glitchy Azteca, do we? I'm willing to wait, but I feel this update might have been better kept under wraps.

There's practically nothing here; although the dungeon recall teleport may be useful to wizards who are stilling leveling up (as most high-level dungeons don't allow teleportation) the new "Team Up" function is, in my opinion, quite useless.

Do you know how Ranked Team PvP works, if you haven't formed a team with your friends? You're teamed up with random players and no concrete strategy; the intricate battle plans necessary to succeed in this area are nonexistent. Talk to anyone familiar with team gameplay and they'll tell you that a defined strategy is necessary in PvP.

The same goes for PvE; at least, the cheat dungeons. Although the Team Up feature may be somewhat useful for lower-leveled wizards leery of going into a dungeon on their own, the more crowded places, for which I believe this feature was initially intended, also require a knowledge of the cheats and how to circumvent them.

Team Up is basically Quick Join for dungeons. I had hoped for a way for group members to instantly teleport into a dungeon without sigil jumpers invading, but sadly, this is not the case. I hope such a feature will be added soon, and I'll continue to sit tight for Khrysalis. The promise of plot twists are one of the only reasons I'm still excited. (Although: KI says that "Khrysalis will bring an end to the Morganthe story arc - or will it?" If Morganthe the cardboard power-hungry villain is here for yet another arc, I'll probably quit or something. Just saying.)
However, I was unsure which world to do first, so I've decided to let you, the readers, decide!

Simply vote on the poll in the sidebar; it will close at the end of the month!

Note: I will not be doing Khrysalis until the rest of it comes out and I finish playing through it.

(Basically, if you want to see me bash Azteca, vote Azteca - if you want a more, shall we say, rational review...don't.)

Thanks! :)
